Melina speaks on the Marbles (188kb)
Although Melina was a bad student, she was actually a very clever and outgoing person and she always knew what she wanted to do in her life. She managed to make a career as a singer and an actress. In that period of her life she fought against the dictatorship and she was exiled. When democracy came back, her exiled finished. She decided that her previous career had also finished and she started a new career as a politician. She was elected to parliament as an MP for the Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and was Minister of Culture for ten years. She fought for the return of the Parthenon Marbles and she planned a lot for their eventual return to Greece. Her name was synonymous with decisiveness, a fighting-spirit and broad-mindedness. She died on 6 March 1994 and her State Funeral was an occasion of great mourning for all Greeks, regardless of political allegiance. We would like to dedicate this Web Site to her memory.
